Robert Mangold made "Study Attic Series VIII" with understated materials and a deceptively simple approach to color. It's a study, so it’s all about the process, right? We’re seeing his work in progress. The texture is quiet, but present; the paper has a tooth, and the ochre block reveals the subtle strokes of the brush. That ochre itself, a humble, earthy tone, is laid down in a diagonal slash that confidently divides the space. Then there’s that drawn figure-eight, barely there, like a ghostly echo. It's tentative, searching, maybe even a bit melancholic. Look how it hovers over the painted surface, a delicate balance between control and letting go. Mangold reminds me of Agnes Martin, another artist who found profundity in simplicity. In the end, it's about seeing, feeling, and embracing the beauty of ambiguity.
