This is a small, black and white photograph of a group on a beach, maybe it was captured with a simple camera and a candid approach. There is a real looseness and spontaneity to it. What’s interesting is the texture – the graininess of the print gives a sense of immediacy, like you’re right there on the beach with them. The way the light hits the sand and the fabric of their clothes creates all these different shades of grey, it’s really quite beautiful. I’m drawn to the woman standing on the right, with her hand on her hip. She’s got this confident pose, and the way the light falls on her dress makes it almost glow. It reminds me a bit of some of the early street photography, where the artists were just capturing everyday life as it happened. Like Eugène Atget, who documented Paris in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s not about perfection, it’s about capturing a moment in time.
