This beer jug was crafted by Pierre-Emile Jeannest, and what immediately strikes the eye is the material's capacity to express opulence. The jug's surface is crowded with figures and foliage, creating a dense, almost overwhelming visual texture. The use of silver and gold isn’t merely decorative, but structural. The contrast between the two metals accentuates the jug's form, with gold emphasizing the base and lip, drawing attention to the vessel's function. Meanwhile, the silver forms the backdrop for the relief work, where a riot of putti and vines enact a bacchanalian scene. This dynamic composition, brimming with classical motifs, recalls earlier traditions of European sculpture and decorative arts. However, the jug's overall design also reflects a shift towards excess. It’s an object that invites contemplation of how materials and forms can converge to create statements about wealth and taste.

Although the firm of Elkington and Company is known for its high quality electroplated silver, the company also manufactured sterling silver. This beer jug, decorated with inebriated putti and surrounded by hop vines was exhibited as part of Elkington's display at the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle. This jug is a later re-issue of the original design.
