This dish was created by Challinor, Taylor and Company between 1866 and 1891. Observe how the marbling effect swirls within the glass, contrasting with the structured basket weave design. These motifs carry echoes through time. The undulating curves suggest the ebb and flow of the ocean, a timeless symbol of change and continuity. The basket weave—a structured pattern of interconnectedness, of community and labor. We find variations of this textile pattern in ancient Roman mosaics as well as in Renaissance paintings; its symbolism shifts, sometimes representing domesticity and order, sometimes a more complex web of human relationships. This visual language is a powerful force, resonating with our subconscious. These symbols touch something primal within us, triggering associations and memories that transcend our individual experiences. The cyclical, non-linear progression of these motifs invites us to reflect on how symbols resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings in different historical contexts.
