Nicolaes de Bruyn created this print, "Two little angels count money and two little angels with junk and flute," during a time when the Netherlands was becoming a major financial power. Here, we see cherubic figures engaged in two distinct activities that reflect early modern life. On one side, two angels are immersed in music and play, seemingly carefree. Juxtaposed, the other two are diligently counting coins at a table, a ledger open before them, perhaps symbolizing commerce and accounting. The image presents a tension between worldly pursuits and more whimsical, carefree activities. De Bruyn seems to be highlighting different aspects of society as it developed during the economic transformation of the 16th and 17th century. This contrast invites reflection on the values and priorities of a rapidly changing world, and our own relationship to labor and leisure.
