This is a page from a photo album entitled, “Vrije tijd in het militaire kamp” (Free time in the military camp) made by an anonymous artist. Oh, the quiet of a photograph! I can imagine someone carefully peeling back the corner of each print, aligning each one perfectly, and pressing down. The maker had a quiet intensity. I'm so curious about who arranged these images. The brown backing acts almost like a neutral ground, as in a painting. Each photo floats in its own little universe, surrounded by an ocean of brown, and together they form an overall composition on the page. Is there a narrative? Is there some intention in the juxtaposition of these images? I love trying to understand how someone else sees the world. It's a bit like making a painting, where every mark is a decision, a way of seeing, a way of knowing.
