Robert Frank's gelatin silver print, "Festival--Children" captures a moment, or maybe a process, of communal gathering. Look how the grey tones deepen and lighten, like a song, as Frank moves our eye through the crowd. Notice the soft, almost blurry focus, especially on the baby in the center. It’s as if Frank is painting with light, softening the edges to create a feeling more than a clear picture. The texture of the photograph feels grainy, human, like the world isn't perfect. There is a beautiful tension between the crisp details on the table in the lower left and the soft crowd of faces. That young boy with the wide-eyes seems to be looking right at us, inviting us to see the world with a sense of wonder and a little bit of skepticism. Frank's work always felt like a conversation, not just with photography but with life itself. Like Garry Winogrand, he wasn't afraid to show the mess, the beauty, and the ambiguity of being alive.
