Laurens Lodewijk Kleijn created this photograph of an unknown woman sometime in the 19th century. The image presents us with a woman in an elaborate dress, hat, and jewelry, likely of considerable wealth. The studio setting and formal pose tell us much about the burgeoning culture of photography at this time. Photography’s rise was intertwined with social status. The technology was expensive and required a certain degree of leisure to engage with, and portraiture became a popular way for the middle class to emulate the gentry. However, we cannot ignore that this image is, in itself, a construction. The woman, the clothes, the furniture; these were all carefully arranged for the photograph. Was this simply a means of capturing an individual likeness, or was it an attempt to craft a particular public persona? To better understand the social dynamics at play here, we need to consider the context in which Kleijn was working. By consulting local archives, newspaper articles, and institutional records, we can begin to understand the economic and political forces that shaped this image. Only then can we gain a richer appreciation of the artwork and the social realities it reflects.
