This silver pyx was crafted in the 16th century by Gaspar Gallo. Above all else, it is marked by its Christian iconography. Note the cross that surmounts the piece, a symbol that has undergone a fascinating metamorphosis throughout history. We see the cross as a symbol of profound spiritual significance. Yet, we must recall its origin as an instrument of punishment, repurposed through Christ's sacrifice. Similarly, consider the water motif along the upper portion of the pyx, reminiscent of both cleansing and chaos. These symbols, rooted in ancient fears and hopes, echo through time. Interestingly, the vessel's swirling base and the dome evoke the sacred, the movement upward toward enlightenment or divine connection. This echoes the ancient Greek amphora, a vessel holding wine, but now used for the Eucharist. Ultimately, the pyx reveals how religious symbols are continuously reshaped, bearing witness to our evolving spiritual and psychological landscape.
