This is ‘Boerderij’ by Karl Prokop, it looks like it was made with ink and paper, maybe as part of a book? The dark, moody palette with its emphasis on tonal variation creates a sense of drama, but also of intimacy. It’s like stumbling across a secret world that has been hidden in plain sight. The mark-making is very loose, sketchy almost, and invites you to piece together the scene yourself. It’s a process of co-creation where the viewer actively participates in bringing the image to life. I’m drawn to the area around the doorway, where the darkness really seems to gather, hinting at the unknown depths within. The light catches the edges, creating a halo effect that makes the building look almost otherworldly. Looking at this image I am reminded of Piranesi, or maybe Goya. Both artists had an intense vision, that explored themes of darkness, and the grotesque. Like ‘Boerderij’, their works are an invitation to look beyond the surface and confront the mysteries that lie beneath.
