Giovanni Battista Piranesi etched this view of the Temple of Janus, an ancient Roman symbol of beginnings, transitions, and duality. Note the arch, a motif recurrent through history, serving as both a physical and symbolic gateway. It speaks of transitions, passages from one state to another. Echoes of this form appear in triumphal arches across the Roman Empire and persist in contemporary architecture, each time charged with the anticipation of what lies beyond.
