Elizabeth Josephine Poyen created this sampler, known as the Poyen Family Record Sampler, between 1814 and 1824. The piece is a fine example of needlework art from the early 19th century. Created in the tradition of samplers, it features a grid pattern with diamond shapes that are filled with detailed embroidery depicting plants and flowers. Each diamond also includes the name and birthdate of a family member. The sampler highlights the craft skills of the artist, as well as the cultural practice of recording family histories through decorative works of art.
