This October calendar page, made by Theo van Hoytema, uses graphic marks to create a sense of lightness and movement. You can almost feel the cool air of autumn! I imagine Van Hoytema sketching outside, leaves swirling around him as he tried to capture the restless energy of the birds as they gather to migrate. There’s a real sense of pattern in the design – the leaves around the edge, each little square for the days of the month, with small bird icons – like a little dance across the page. I'm drawn to the way the artist captured a sense of flight. The birds aren't just sitting there; they're in motion. You can sense the wind beneath their wings. It’s a reminder that the best art often captures the feeling of a thing, not just the appearance. It shows how artists can use simple elements to evoke complex emotions and ideas.
