Jakob Danielsen made this small watercolor on paper, and what I see is a whale hunt at sea under a wide open sky. I imagine Danielsen, out on the water, squinting, smelling the salt air. Look how thinly he applied the watercolor. The paint barely kisses the paper, like a whisper. The colors are muted-- browns, grays, blues, and yet, the scene is full of drama. The little boat, dwarfed by the whale and the vastness of the sea, makes you consider the bravery and skill involved in the hunt. This reminds me of some of Winslow Homer's marine paintings, and the whale reminds me of Moby Dick, but this painting, it has a quiet intensity. It captures a specific time and place, and it speaks to the relationship between humans and nature.
