Niels Larsen Stevns made this sketchbook page, filled with sketches of animals, using graphite on paper. It's undated, but feels like a glimpse into the artist's process, his way of seeing and capturing movement. The sketches are light, almost ethereal. The graphite barely kisses the surface of the paper, creating a delicate dance between intention and chance. Look at the upper left corner - the lines depicting the animal forms are tentative, searching, as if Stevns is feeling his way through the shapes. There's a real sense of immediacy, like he's trying to capture the essence of these creatures in a fleeting moment. Stevns reminds me of Degas, who also had a knack for capturing the grace and energy of animals and dancers with deceptively simple lines. Both artists seem to understand that art isn't about perfection, but about capturing the raw, unfiltered energy of life. It’s a quiet reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, a messy, beautiful exploration of the world around us.
