David Annesley’s sculpture, Jump, is a study in metal that plays with the interplay of form and space. It’s a simple, almost cartoonish gesture rendered in solid material. The surface has a smooth, industrial feel, yet the curves suggest flexibility, as if the metal could unfurl or bounce back. The way the upper element rests so precariously on the other makes the entire composition feel light and buoyant, despite the obvious weight. The shapes are reduced to their essence, allowing us to appreciate the pure geometry of the form. The arrangement of curves reminds me of paintings by Ellsworth Kelly, with their emphasis on color and geometric forms. Like Kelly, Annesley reduces his subject to its basic components, creating a powerful visual statement. These abstract forms invite us to see the world in new ways.
