Editor: Cy Twombly's "No. II" at the Tate is quite the mixed media work on paper. It combines drawing, collage and handwriting. What do you make of his process? Curator: Twombly's approach to materials is fascinating. The interplay of "high" art techniques like drawing with "low" materials like photographs and notebook paper disrupts the hierarchy of artistic value. How does the use of these commonplace materials challenge our understanding of artistic labor? Editor: That's a great way to think about it, thanks! Curator: Consider how the accessibility of these materials and processes allows for a re-evaluation of artistic skill and the commodification of art itself. Editor: I hadn't thought of it like that before. It does make you wonder about the relationship between the artist, the artwork, and the market.
