Editor: This engraving, titled "Retorica met zwaard en twee kleine engelen met bazuinen," dates from the mid-15th century, and is attributed to an anonymous artist. It feels so formal, almost regal, yet the figures feel very approachable. What’s your initial take on this? Curator: Oh, isn't it marvelous? To me, this piece sings of the Italian Renaissance’s rediscovery of classical ideals. The figure embodies Rhetoric, or persuasive speech, as a virtue - both powerful, indicated by the sword, and divinely inspired, by the little cherubic trumpeters flanking her. Do you feel the balance between her rather stern expression, and the almost playful presence of those cherubs? Editor: Yes, I see that juxtaposition! It makes Rhetoric seem less about pure aggression, and more about...inspired communication? Why is she barefoot, though? It seems a little out of place for such a majestic figure. Curator: Good eye! Perhaps the bare feet signal humility. Or maybe they represent rhetoric grounded in truth, free from artifice? These Renaissance allegories always have so many potential readings, don't you think? It makes you wonder about the original viewer, decoding these symbols. What story did they create? Editor: True! And that even though the piece is very detailed, like in the folds of her dress and the cherubs' hair, there's still an air of mystery to it. Curator: Exactly! And isn’t it intriguing to consider how different it is experiencing this artwork in our time? Thank you, I see that more clearly now. Editor: It's been illuminating to discuss how a work from so long ago can still prompt questions about power and communication!
