Stefan Dimitrescu gave us "Balchik Corner" with watercolors, and you can just tell it was a dance of brush and pigment. I love how the washes of color blend so freely, creating shapes that suggest rather than define. Look at the way the shadows pool on the ground, and the trees become dark, brooding masses. There is this great push and pull between control and accident. It's like Dimitrescu set the stage, and then let the water do its thing. I can almost feel the dampness of the paper, the way the pigment blooms and spreads. The corner of the building is just suggested with bold strokes and watery puddles. Dimitrescu manages to evoke the essence of the scene with such minimal means. Reminds me a little of John Singer Sargent, that same ability to capture light and atmosphere with effortless brushwork. Ultimately, it's about seeing, feeling, and letting the paint lead the way.
