Eugène Isabey sketched these old houses in Le Havre with graphite. Note the intricate articulation of the façade, built with strong vertical and horizontal beams. This framework is not unlike the ‘pillar and lintel’ construction found in ancient Greek temples, which embodies the very foundation of classical architecture. Consider the evolution of this basic structure, which first appeared in sacred temples, then was adapted for domestic residences, and now re-emerges here, drawn by Isabey, who unconsciously echoes this ancient architectural tradition. One cannot help but reflect on how the memory of classical forms resurfaces. The sturdy beams, the pitched roof – all these elements convey a sense of solidity and permanence. This artwork might stir in us a longing for stability but, conversely, also a deep sense of nostalgia for the impermanence of dwellings and of life.
