Rosalind Solomon made this photograph in New York; it's a black and white silver gelatin print. It seems like Rosalind Solomon was walking the streets of New York, just trying to capture something about the place, maybe something about the people. I wonder what she was thinking when she came across this guy in front of the American flag? The flag is a striking symbol, but it’s complicated. It carries so much weight, so many different meanings for different people. And then there's the grid of the skyscraper in the background. The composition of the photograph is really interesting. The flag is almost like a painting in itself, with its sharp lines and bold contrasts. The grid of the windows almost looks like an Agnes Martin. Artists are always in conversation with each other, across time, inspiring each other’s creativity. Photography, like painting, embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
