This black and white photograph, titled 'New York,' was captured by Rosalind Solomon. I'm really drawn to how Solomon plays with layers and depth here. Look at the textures: the crisp lines of the flag, the smooth skin of the man, the reflective glass of the building. They all have such different qualities, yet they're pressed together in this tight composition. The man’s hand raised to his neck almost blends into the stripes of the flag. It's like he's both part of the symbol and separate from it, questioning what it all means. It's a powerful gesture that seems to question the notion of identity and belonging. Solomon reminds me of Diane Arbus, another photographer who wasn't afraid to look closely at the complexities of human experience, asking us to embrace ambiguity and uncertainty.
