This lithograph titled Interior I is by William Brice, but when it was made, I don’t know. It looks like it could be a kind of psychological study or observation. I mean, what does it feel like to be inside your head, inside a room, inside your life? Brice’s marks are dark and heavy, like he’s digging deep to find what he is looking for! The criss-crossing lines suggest some kind of interior world. I like the idea of an ‘interior’ as a place where thoughts and feelings and objects all mix together. The way Brice uses line to create texture and depth, it reminds me of some of the drawings of Philip Guston. It's all a bit uneasy, but compelling. Maybe the next artist will take some marks, lines, or ideas from this and respond with their own work!
