Rosalia Lane created this "Bonnet" with pen and ink and watercolor. At first glance, it's a charming fashion plate, but look closer and you will notice the artist has chosen an unusual medium with which to portray an everyday object. The delicate lines of ink define the form of the bonnet, from the brim to the ribbons, with an amazing economy of gesture, and only minimal watercolor added. The choice to depict such an object of labor through the use of line makes me question the value of production at this time in history. Notice how the artist's skillful handling of these basic materials transforms something so mundane into a work of art that transcends its original purpose. Lane elevates the status of the bonnet, encouraging us to appreciate not only the artistry of its design but also the social history of the textile industry itself.
