This silver gelatin print, "Sean McKeon and Unidentified Man (and Iris Love)," was made by Andy Warhol, who knew a thing or two about capturing a moment. The grayscale gives it this timeless feel, like a memory fading in and out. There's a realness to it, though, isn't there? Look at the way the light catches the rims of the wine glasses, turning them into these delicate halos. It's a photograph, sure, but it's also about the feel of a particular time and place. The texture of the silver gelatin gives it a tactile quality. It reminds me of some of Gerhard Richter's blurred photos-turned-paintings, that same interest in the mechanics of seeing and remembering. With Warhol, it’s like he’s saying, “Here’s a moment, take it or leave it,” but of course, by framing it, he’s already made it iconic. Art's like that, always a conversation.
