Wilhelm Marstrand sketched "Blyantsudkast til samme motiv som recto. Et uheld på skomagerfamiliens skovtur" – or, “Pencil sketch of the same motif as recto. An accident on the shoemaker family's picnic” – using graphite on paper. The sketch is a flurry of tentative lines, capturing a moment of misfortune with surprising levity. Marstrand's choice of graphite is interesting. It is a humble material, quick and erasable, perfect for capturing fleeting ideas and it has the benefit of being easily corrected. The shoemaker's trade is central to the image. Cobbling was a laborious, skilled craft, essential to everyday life. The tools, the posture, all speak to the daily grind of working-class existence. Yet, here they are, attempting leisure, a picnic disrupted. Marstrand’s sketch isn't just about aesthetics; it is about the reality of labor, the desire for respite, and the ever-present possibility of things going awry, all rendered in the common medium of graphite. It reminds us that even in sketches, materials and subject matter are intertwined.
