Pekka Halonen made this etching, Girl Reading, sometime around the turn of the last century, and it's just so immediate. The network of marks feels like a real expression of seeing, how we piece things together with our eyes. The lines are dense, scratchy, and incredibly active, really bringing the image to life. Look at the way he renders her hair with these energetic scribbles, it’s not about detail, but about the feeling of texture and movement. It reminds me that artmaking is a process of discovery, not just replication. The hatching around the book she's reading is like a little world of concentration. There's something so intimate about it. It feels a bit like the early etchings of Picasso, who was also interested in the power of simple, expressive lines. Ultimately, what I love about this piece is its openness, it invites us to bring our own experiences and interpretations to it.
