Jesus Rafael Soto created "Bleu Vertical", an artwork that strikes with its interplay of colour, line, and space. The upper portion captivates with its solid, deep blue, evoking a sense of calm and boundlessness. Below, a dark, horizontally striated section contrasts sharply, providing a grounded base from which slender metal rods extend outwards, disrupting the solidity of the form. These rods, seemingly floating in space, introduce movement and a sense of the ephemeral, challenging our perception of depth and dimension. Soto masterfully plays with the Gestalt principles of perception, inviting us to see beyond the physical object and to engage with the dynamic relationship between form and void. The artwork, in its abstraction, destabilizes the conventional figure-ground relationship, prompting a re-evaluation of spatial and material boundaries. It underscores the idea that art is not just an object but an experience, constantly shifting with our perspective.
