Gilbert Sackerman made this watercolor painting on paper, "Bandbox," without a known date, approaching artmaking as a process. Sackerman's painting style feels both innocent and studied. The thin washes of blue and grey feel like daydreams made visible. Look closely at how the forms are outlined, then filled in unevenly. It creates a tension between precision and looseness, echoing the tension between what’s real and what’s imagined. This isn’t a photorealistic giraffe. This is something from the land of make-believe. The floral border, the figures reaching up to the giraffe, and the dreamy landscape, all feel like a theatrical set. I'm reminded of Henry Darger, another outsider artist who created elaborate fantasy worlds on paper. With Sackerman, as with Darger, we find art that prioritizes the artist's unique vision, reminding us that art doesn't always need to be polished to be powerful.
