Diana Mantuana created this engraving, "Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael Adoring the Virgin and Child," around the turn of the 17th century. At its heart is the age-old motif of the Madonna and Child, enthroned here on clouds and adored by archangels. Consider Michael, standing over a vanquished figure—a clear echo of classical depictions of heroes overcoming their foes, but now imbued with Christian symbolism. This gesture, the triumphant stance over a defeated enemy, transcends time and culture. We see it re-emerge in countless iterations, from ancient Roman sculptures to Renaissance paintings, each time charged with the prevailing cultural values. It speaks to our collective memory of struggle and triumph, an archetype deeply embedded in the human psyche. The power of this image lies in its ability to tap into these primordial memories, engaging us on a subconscious level. Note how the archangels are positioned, framing the Virgin and Child. This compositional element, reminiscent of classical friezes, lends a sense of solemnity and reverence. The cyclical progression of symbols is not linear but a constant resurgence and reinterpretation, echoing through the corridors of time.
