This etching, made by Gerrit Oortman, presents an allegorical scene framed by the social and cultural norms of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The image is divided into two mirrored scenes, each depicting a tree populated with figures, tended to by youths. Within this carefully constructed tableau, gender roles are subtly explored. Maagden, or virgins, are seen in the trees alongside knapen or boys. The poem inscribed beneath each side of the artwork provides additional context: the scene is designed to explore themes of nature, youth, and desire. The poem touches on the male gaze towards women. One can't help but wonder about the single, sickly figure asleep at the tree's base, a melancholic contrast to the vibrant activity above, subtly nodding toward themes of exclusion. The print seems to highlight prevailing societal attitudes, gently probing at their underlying tensions, even as it adheres to traditional representations of youth and nature.
