Robert Frank created this gelatin silver print by layering strips of black and white film. I can only imagine him in the darkroom, cutting and composing, editing his own work. I love seeing an artist's process, the evidence of their decisions, laid bare. The light-drenched landscapes of Andraitx, Spain, are a stark contrast to the darker, more interior shots. I imagine Frank walking the streets, observing the people and places, trying to capture something essential about this place. That slash of red marker – it looks like a painterly gesture amidst all the photographic detail. Was Frank drawn to it or did he want to draw our eyes there? It seems like he was having a conversation with himself, and with us, about what it means to see and how we interpret the world around us. It’s a good reminder that art is about the questions, not the answers.
