Alfred Freddy Krupa made this painting, Birth of the moon, using gestural marks of black ink on paper. The moon is born from these looping black lines. I can just imagine Krupa with his brush, swirling and swooping, trying to capture something so elusive and ethereal. It's got this really raw, immediate feeling to it. Like he's channeling the energy of the cosmos right onto the page. I see the roots of a tree reaching down, and then up top, a bird taking flight. It reminds me of other artists who are pushing the limits of what painting can do, like Franz Kline. But Krupa's got his own thing going on, his mark-making feels so personal, like a signature. He's part of this ongoing conversation that artists have been having for centuries. It’s always changing, but we're all building on each other's ideas. We all embrace uncertainty, right?
