This design for a tile panel with a vase of flowers was made by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, but when, exactly, is a bit of a mystery. The sketch is made with pencil, which gives it a tentative feel. It's more about process than perfection. I love the wispy blues and yellows. The whole thing feels like a memory or a dream. Check out how the vase seems to sit on a classical column - a sort of stage for this bouquet. You can almost feel him playing with ideas. There's a looseness to the drawing, a freedom. It reminds me of Henri Matisse's paper cut-outs, or even some of Odilon Redon’s dreamscapes. It makes you wonder what other conversations Cachet was having with artists of his time. What is design, if not a conversation?
