Editor: This striking engraving by Francis Barlow depicts an eagle clutching a snake. It feels like a real power play, all those sharp lines creating so much tension. What do you make of this image? Curator: For me, it’s like glimpsing into the anxieties of Barlow’s time. The eagle, traditionally a symbol of power, confronts the serpent, often associated with deception or chaos. It's a dance of order against disorder, no? The funny thing is, are we sure who's winning? Editor: I see what you mean. It's not just a straightforward victory. Curator: Exactly! It leaves you wondering what Barlow truly believed about the balance of power. Food for thought, indeed! Editor: Definitely gives a lot to consider. I'll never look at an eagle and snake the same way!
