This is a print called Scènes uit het Oude Testament, made by Daniël Broedelet, although the date is unknown. Immediately, the division of the scene into smaller boxes directs our eyes to the linear composition of the piece. The composition and placement of each scene show Broedelet’s skillful articulation of spatial relationships. The shapes and arrangements in each little frame seem to create a sense of balance and rhythm that guides our visual experience. This print presents a semiotic exploration into the biblical stories of Noach, Cham, Babel and Job. The use of familiar imagery and composition can be interpreted through a structuralist lens, looking at how these stories are framed. Each section seems to reflect the structure and themes prevalent in religious narratives. Consider how Broedelet has destabilized these established meanings and engaged with new ways of thinking about representation. He uses line to lead our eyes, inviting contemplation on these stories.
