Robert Peak created 'Twins', and although the date is unknown, its style situates it within the broader aesthetic trends of the late 20th century. The painting presents a stylized depiction of two women whose forms seem to mirror and oppose one another. Their poised profiles, elaborate hairstyles, and the presence of jewelry suggest a certain social class and attention to personal presentation. During the late 20th century, images of women were often highly stylized in media, and art often became a site to challenge or subvert these representations. While Peak’s work isn't overtly critical, the surrealist design elements and composition offer an alternative to traditional portraiture. The women have similar features yet are not identical. The ambiguity prompts us to think about identity, and asks us what it means to be an individual versus being part of a collective. The twins invite conversations around how identity is both performed and perceived.
