Christo made Package in 1974 from fabric, rope, and cardboard. It's all wrapped up, like a secret waiting to be unraveled! I can imagine Christo puzzling over this object, figuring out just how much fabric to use, how taut to pull the rope. Was he thinking about concealing and revealing, about how wrapping something changes the way we see it? Does the mundane become precious once it's under wraps? The creases and folds in the fabric create their own sort of abstract composition, a topography of texture. And the rope, crisscrossing, adds another layer of visual complexity. It's like a drawing in three dimensions. Christo's work reminds me that art can be about transforming the ordinary, inviting us to look at the world with fresh eyes. Painting is similar - an ongoing dialogue, each artist building on what came before.
