This is an anonymous design for a cabinet in an interior setting, rendered in watercolor, pen, and ink. With its ornamentation featuring theatrical masks and classical figures, the cabinet almost seems to perform its function. We can think about how the design reflects the cultural values and social dynamics of its time. Interior design, historically, has been a domain closely associated with the domestic sphere and, by extension, with women. This makes me wonder about the role of women as consumers and creators of design. The theatrical masks, reminiscent of ancient Greek drama, evoke questions about identity and performance. Are we looking at a reflection on the performative aspects of gender, or an exploration of how we 'stage' ourselves within domestic spaces? The classical figures hint at a longing for a perceived golden age. The design invites us to reflect on the stories we tell ourselves about beauty, gender, and history.
