This silver gelatin print was made by Robert Frank, capturing a supporter at a convention hall in Chicago. I love this image and the angle that Frank has taken, cropping out the supporter's face and yet inviting us into the depth and mystery of American politics. The man is wearing a trilby, and a blazer, and his lapel has a badge for Adlai, as well as what appears to be a small cross. He is carrying a sign for Kefauver. Who was he really supporting? The composition of the image is complex and full of tension, inviting us to consider our own beliefs and commitments, and to allow for a certain amount of fluidity and ambiguity. I think Frank is showing us that people are complicated and political allegiances are not always clear. Perhaps we should allow for uncertainty and multiple readings. I think Frank is suggesting that we should all be open to change, doubt, and self-reflection.
