Resting by the Shore 

Wilhelm Kotarbinski created this painting, entitled Resting by the Shore, sometime during his career as an artist which spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kotarbinski lived in a time when artistic styles were shifting. His work reflects this transition, blending academic traditions with emerging Symbolist and early Modernist influences. Here, the image presents a scene of leisure and intimacy, but if we look closely, we can see some complicated issues of identity and representation at play. The painting depicts two women in repose by the sea: one with darker features and attire, and another with fair skin, reclining against her companion.
