Francesco Solimena rendered “Christ Healing the Lame Man” with pen and brown wash on cream laid paper. Immediately, one notices how Solimena used the sepia tones of the brown wash to bring to life the figures in the composition. Solimena’s work is a study in the use of line and depth to guide the viewer's eye. He employs a dynamic arrangement of figures across the horizontal span of the work which moves our gaze through the scene. The contrast between the darker, more densely rendered figures on the left to the lighter treatment of figures on the right creates a sense of depth. This technique draws our attention to the central event, where Christ extends his hand. The strategic placement and varying tones serve to emphasize the miraculous moment, inviting a prolonged gaze. The drawing exemplifies how formal elements can create both a narrative and an aesthetic experience. The interaction between shadow and light provides not only structure, but also contributes to the drama inherent in the act of healing.
