This is George Hendrik Breitner’s sketch, "Studie, mogelijk van een paard in een landschap" which translates to "Study, possibly of a horse in a landscape". Breitner was known for his depictions of working-class life in Amsterdam during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His art captured the gritty realities of urban existence. This sketch gives us a glimpse into Breitner's artistic process. The quick, almost scribbled lines, suggest a fleeting moment captured on paper. We see a landscape, perhaps with a horse, but the details are minimal, inviting us to fill in the gaps. Breitner was interested in conveying the atmosphere and feeling of a scene rather than precise details. As he said himself, "Painting is feeling." This piece invites us to reflect on the relationship between the artist and their subject, the city, and the everyday lives of its inhabitants. It reminds us that art can be found in the simplest of moments and that beauty can exist even in the most unassuming of places.
