This long ladies stocking was produced out of yellow silk tricot by Firma Louis Bahner. Imagine the maker, working away, repeating the same shape, thinking about the use to which this will be put. I'm reminded of Agnes Martin’s paintings, with their subtle lines and grids. And I’m imagining the soft, smooth texture of silk, how it feels against the skin. There's something so intimate about clothing, it literally lives on our bodies. Think of all the seams and stitches that make up the form, each one carefully placed. It’s like a drawing in thread, a way of mapping the body. The folds and wrinkles in the fabric create a sense of movement, a gentle rhythm, and a sort of echo of the form within. It is like Cy Twombly's drawings, which evoke a sense of energy and spontaneity. Isn’t it amazing how artists and designers are always building on what came before?
