This long ladies stocking was made from yellow silk tricot by Firma Louis Bahner. It has a certain quality to it, like a drawing. The gentle play of light across the stocking's surface reminds me of an Agnes Martin painting. The subtle shifts in tone, the barely-there shadows and creases, they create a kind of minimalist landscape. You can almost feel the soft give of the fabric and how it would conform to the shape of a leg. The color is interesting too, a muted yellow that feels both vintage and modern at the same time. It is so subtle, so quiet, it almost disappears. It makes me think about the history of clothing, about the way that even the most functional objects can be beautiful and expressive, like a proto-Pop Art Claes Oldenburg sculpture.
