Reijer Stolk made this sketch of three cats with a pencil. There’s a beautiful immediacy to it, as if Stolk was capturing a fleeting moment of feline life. Look at how the lines dance across the page, almost as if he’s feeling his way around the forms. There’s no laborious shading or precise detail, just a sense of capturing the essence of these creatures. The cat on the lower left is particularly captivating, with a scribbled pattern to define the fur on its chest. It’s the kind of mark-making that embraces imperfection and values the energy of the process. Stolk reminds me of Cy Twombly, actually. Both artists share a similar sensitivity to line and a willingness to embrace the raw, unrefined nature of drawing. It’s this embrace of ambiguity and openness that makes art so endlessly fascinating. It’s not about definitive answers, but about the questions we ask along the way.
