Reijer Stolk made this drawing of three cats with what looks like a graphite stick, probably in a sketchbook. I love the one that is lying down; it looks like a cloud. It makes me think about what the artist was feeling, watching these cats. There is a real sense of just quickly trying to capture their forms. The lines are loose, playful, and searching, with an economy of means. What to leave out? What to put in? Just trying to get that curve of the back, that pointy ear. And when you do a drawing like this, you're also thinking about all the other artists that have ever drawn cats: Picasso, Hockney, on and on. All artists are in dialogue with each other, all the time, and in that way, this simple drawing feels like part of a big, ongoing conversation. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most profound statements are made with the lightest touch.
