Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky captured this oil painting of an "Exploding Ship," its date is unknown, but it currently resides in the Aivazovsky National Art Gallery, in Feodosiya, Ukraine. Aivazovsky was a painter attached to the Naval Staff. As such, his paintings were intended to demonstrate and celebrate the power of the Russian Imperial Navy. The painting presents a dramatic scene, illuminated by fire, yet this canvas also leaves many things unsaid. Who were the combatants in this battle? What was at stake? What was the human cost? The exploding ship embodies the destructive potential of military institutions. But Aivazovsky, who enjoyed close institutional support from the military, seems more focused on an aesthetic interpretation of sea warfare. A painting like this needs a historian to ask the questions that the image leaves unanswered. Further resources are needed to interpret its full social and institutional context.
