Robert Frank made this gelatin silver print, “Man in automobile--Los Angeles”, at an unknown date. The grainy texture and stark contrast is like a punch in the face, and really makes you feel the grit of the city. You can tell he wasn't trying to pretty things up, and I think that's awesome. Look at how the light catches the man’s cheek and hat, almost like he's in a spotlight. His gaze out the window makes you wonder what he's thinking about, what he's looking at. The whole image feels like a stolen moment, a quick glance into someone else's life. It’s a mood. Frank reminds me of Garry Winogrand. Both these photographers were masters of capturing everyday life with such honesty and rawness, that you can’t help but be moved by it. And isn't that what art is all about, making a connection?
