These quick pencil sketches by Niels Larsen Stevns, we think made as studies for larger works, really show the bones of artmaking. You see his searching lines, the way he’s figuring out how to represent these circular, almost architectural forms on the page. I love seeing the process so bare, the way the graphite catches the light. The paper itself, lined and worn, adds to that feeling of something immediate and intimate. Notice how some lines are darker, more confident, while others are tentative, like he’s feeling his way through the shapes. Look at the way the lower circle has these lines that extend down, like roots or supports, it makes me wonder about the weight and balance of the final composition. These drawings remind me of the work of Philip Guston, that same raw, honest approach to mark-making. Art’s not about perfection, it’s about that messy, beautiful struggle to make sense of the world.
