This sketchbook page of drawings was made by Niels Larsen Stevns. Look at the soft graphite lines sketching out these circular forms on lined paper. You can almost see him hunched over this book, his hand moving quickly, trying to capture the images in his mind. There’s a real intimacy to a drawing like this, isn’t there? You get a sense of the artist’s thought process, the way he’s feeling out the forms, correcting them, letting them emerge. I can imagine Larsen Stevns experimenting with ideas, the graphite almost dissolving on the page. The texture of the paper, the smudges, they all become part of the story. It's all very human. The way he uses the graphite here is also kind of amazing—loose and free, yet somehow precise. It reminds me of other artists who use drawing as a way to explore and understand the world, like Cy Twombly or even some of the early Renaissance draftsmen. It’s all connected, you know? Artists building on each other, learning from each other, across time. That's what is great about art!
