Leon Karp made this print, Spanish Lady, at some point in the first half of the 20th century. It's all about texture, right? The way the ink sits on the paper, not quite smooth, a little gritty. You can almost feel it, like touching old velvet. Look at how he’s built up the darks around her face – that cloud of ink, and then those flecks that become the hair. It's so physical, like he's wrestling with the image, trying to coax it out of the plate. It reminds me of some of Vuillard's prints, the way he used lithography to create these dense, atmospheric spaces. The whole thing is just a series of marks, building up to a portrait that feels both solid and ephemeral. It’s a reminder that art isn’t about perfection; it's about the process, the struggle, and the beauty that emerges from it.
