This is a page of sketches by Johannes Bosboom, created sometime in the 19th century. Bosboom, born in The Hague, was known for his detailed architectural paintings, often featuring churches and historical buildings. Here, we see a glimpse into his process, a loose collection of images—a horse, a street scene, and studies of women’s heads wearing caps. These women, likely from the working class, are depicted with a sensitivity that acknowledges their presence, their labor, and their lives. Bosboom's choice to include these figures offers a social commentary on the lives of ordinary people, giving visibility to those often overlooked in the grand narratives of history. The sketches invite us to consider the intersections of class, gender, and representation in 19th-century Dutch society. They remind us to look closer at who is included, and who is left out, of the dominant narratives.
