This is Theo van Hoytema's "Kalenderblad voor april 1913 met twee witte duiven op een tak," or Calendar Sheet for April 1913 with two white doves on a branch. Hoytema lived in the Netherlands from 1863 to 1917, and his art was shaped by the turbulent currents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time of industrialization, shifting social structures, and growing national identities. Hoytema, deeply engaged with nature, offers in this calendar sheet a vision of serenity and order. The choice of doves is particularly interesting. Doves have long been symbols of peace, purity, and new beginnings across various cultures. In the context of 1913, with the looming shadow of World War I, the doves might also represent a longing for peace and harmony in a world edging toward conflict. Simultaneously, Hoytema’s interest in ornithology might suggest a modern understanding of our place in the world of living beings. The calendar integrates beauty into the mundane rhythms of daily life. It is both a functional object and a contemplation on time, nature, and the human desire for order and beauty.
